Somewhat?  No, very distracted today.  Phone calls, texts, things to attend to,  allergy headache, and the tropical storm, Jose, is possibly going grace us with a visit here in southern New England.  So I have some hatches to batten down I suppose.   But I also would love to go to the shore a see the wild surf.  So lesson learned today?  Turn off phone and text when I am involved in my studio, until I am ready for both.  Quite taken with exploring the rocks.

#30paintingsin30days!

I am fifteen days into the challenge and I have to say, this is a great way to get refocused.  It so far has been a strange month, one of unexpected phone calls carrying news in the juxtaposition of the birth and a death.  So with that I have been spread a little thin.  But I found that if I start the day in my studio with my sketchbook and some drawing tools, be they dry of wet, and do a fast sketch I seem to actually end up painting for a few hours, which has been my goal.  But today I was looking at the sky, which I do a lot, and was thinking why not try clouds.  Or waves, or what ever.  This challenge also gives me the opportunity to try different techniques, subjects, and genres.   I am pleased to say I was thinking about tomorrows painting and started it!  A new subject for me.

So trying to stay ahead of the game and finish those two baby quilts by the 23rd of this month. Which by the way, both are pieced, layered with batting and backing, and I have begun the quilting on quilt number one and the count down now begins with the final week to work on them.  The mom just found out she was pregnant at the end of August and then found out they were twins! So it is my deal that I made a quilt for each grand child as they came over the years, with these two now starting the great grand baby quilt  thing.  I can not even believe this but a Gigi I will be.  That is what I think I will be to them.  All fun.

Today was a quick easy painting.  It is on a canvas, it is painted, so it is a painting!  A quick sketch with watercolor in my sketchbook  of one of my favorite plants, then immediately to the easel and banged this out.  I have much on my plate such as two baby quilts to sandwich and quilt by the twenty-third!  The quilts are pieced and ready for the next step.

Landscape painting is not something I have explored much of but I had the occasion to visit this beautiful spot, here in Rhode Island, this summer a couple of times.  The rocks intrigued me with their forms and lines.  So I thought I would give it a try.  I would like to do a few more from this place, which sits on a spit of land facing the Atlantic.  It is home to beach home up on stilts, fishermen, beach goers, boaters, and shore birds with a lovely vantage point to view the sunset.

Finding going right into my studio right after breakfast and doing some quick watercolor sketches in my sketchbook, as I sip that last mug of coffee, sets my sails on the right path for the day.

Not much to say yesterday or today which would explain my intense restlessness.  I have much to do, much I am interested in, much I want to read, draw, and paint.  But instead, I pace and have a restlessness I can not seem to banish.  In many ways I understand it...but then again, I don't.

Sunset Rose Hips, Day Six

                                                               Sunset With Rose Hips

                                                               #30paintingsin30days!

Another long day that revolved around a final goodbye to someone  who was a good man... a husband, a father, a grandfather, a great grandfather, worker,  friend, and even a volunteer.   Leaving a legacy of his wife and family of over sixty years,  a good and productive family, my son-in-law being one of them.  But yet there is a sadness because with each loss one realizes how close we all are to that finality.   We are all marching in time towards it.  That's what I do, I process,  I think, and I usually walk away without answers.  In this case, I guess it simply is to live, just live our ordinary lives,  all the moments, and be grateful for them. I believe there a sacredness in the ordinary, if we allow ourselves to see it.  I am an observer and take it all in, always have.  I came home so tired and weary this afternoon and began to take care of myself with rest, food, and not really attending to anything.  Tonight, feeling somewhat normal again, I painted this from memory along with a little sketch I had completed for reference, at the Charleston Breachway.  I sat drawing the rose hips that evening as the sun was going down, feeling so totally at one with myself and all that was around me. The ordinary...

Morning Violets, Day Five

                                                                   Morning Violets
                                                                    watercolor, 5"x7"
                                                                #30paintingsin30days!

This painting was done this week, waiting in the wings  for such a day as this.  The day after a three day weekend, full of the new month errands, bill paying, and the unexpected death of my daughter's father-in-law.  So a wake was in today's plan, a sad plan.

This little watercolor was done in a sketchbook the other morning.   It is a little African Violet I found in Trader Joe's along with a pink one, which I actually painted yesterday in oil.  I like doing sketchbook paintings and drawings of what is in front of me.  I suppose I think, 'sketchbook', and relax.   Usually I title the page, 'From Where I Sit'...though this one and a few others, I did not title in that way.  They are a meditation of sorts and seem to lead me to my oils.   I am finding a looseness now in my watercolors , a change in my approach, which I have been working towards.  So with that,  I offer it today.

My time will have to be budgeted well because I found out tonight I have a baby shower to attend for my first great grand babies.  Yes, babies.  Twins.  A long hormonal story, mom just found out about the pregnancy and the twins, three weeks ago.  I am  making not one, but now two quilts.  And if that is not enough pressure, was told tonight the shower is September 23.  So I will continue all of these ventures with just budgeting out my time better, hoping for no more unexpected events...

Sunset With Maggie
oil, 9"x12"

This is my Maggie from one of my favorite images of her.  My sweet girl breathed her last breath in my arms, July 13, 2017.  She was fifteen years old and I had the privilege of being her person from when she was seven weeks old.  I knew over the last year or so that my time with her was precious so I paid a lot of attention to her, did almost daily drawings of her, and I suppose after my husband's death four years ago, she became my purpose, my companion, my best friend.  I miss that little read dog so much.

"When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see
that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight."
                                                                        ~Kahlil Gibran

Rest in peace my sweet girl.
